Investment Ops to Front Office

Hi All,

As I am interviewing for a private credit investment ops role, I am curious if anyone has any stories or advice moving from ops to front office in their career. I am 23 years old and my goal is to be front office within the next year or two.... Possible? Impossible? Would love to hear some feedback.

There’s plenty of threads on this topic but the general consensus is that it’s almost impossible to go from back to front office without either an MBA or some serious networking and a bunch of things bouncing your way. But it’s possible and I’m an example. I went from back office > big 4 TAS > small boutique IB with a ton of networking, a referral, CFA progress, and a bunch of other stuff ending up in my favor. So possible, but if you have a choice that’s better, go with that choice.

Yeah ofcourse, I hear this often. Just wanted to hear some feedback. This is the best opportunity ive had since I have graduated. I am very interested in buyside Investor Relations/ Business Development. Given I am not aiming for an investment heavy front office role and more of the client facing/relationship side of the business. Does this better my chances to land a role in this position?

If it’s your best and only opportunity and you need $$ obviously take it. Most people’s first job won’t be perfect. Maybe take this job, then try landing in client service, sales, something more applicable for client relationships down the road.

You’ll still need some help, networking, technical education, etc. But at least you’ll be in the industry, meet people, and have a chance to learn so you can eventually make that move. Better back office on your resume than flipping burgers.
