Shoes for college student? casual vs. formal

I'm curious about the community's perspective on appropriate attire for college students aiming for a career in finance. Should students start adopting a formal dress code early on, or just stay in that teen'ish vibes and wear casual footwear like Air Forces, Asics, or Air Maxes?
I know the question may seem funny and "it all depends on what you prefer", but still what are your views on this?

Guy who landed EVR M&A at my university came in with shorts and a tshirt to class everyday. And flipflops. Wear whatever you want.
