2nd career financial services
Seeking 2nd career in financial services likely financial planning/CFP/IAR. I've been doing it unofficially for family, dealing with trusts (and incapacitation), poa, wills, insurance, intestate/probate, retirement, investing, taxes. Also had some runins with civil lawsuits so the critical need for liability insurance is front and center as well. Background in numerical science (BS electrical engr) which was all math. Attempting SIE to prove I can hack the concepts, currently testing 90+ on Kaplan quizzes. Even tho not likely to go RR/stockbroker route. More an analyst than salesperson so rather than build a book of clients, supporting existing Fidelity clients (for example) sounds fine to me. Hoping skills/raw talent can overcome any ageism. Very interesting site here, welcome any thoughts or advice.
It sounds like you have a solid foundation in numerical science and a strong interest in financial planning. Your experience dealing with trusts, insurance, retirement, investing, and taxes will certainly be beneficial in a financial services career. Here are a few pieces of advice:
Certifications: Consider pursuing the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification. This will provide you with comprehensive knowledge about financial planning and boost your credibility in the field.
Networking: Networking is key in the financial services industry. Try to connect with professionals in the field, attend industry events, and join relevant groups on platforms like LinkedIn.
Continued Learning: The financial services industry is constantly evolving. Stay updated with the latest trends and regulations by reading industry publications and attending webinars or workshops.
Leverage Your Strengths: You mentioned that you're more of an analyst than a salesperson. There are plenty of roles in financial services that require strong analytical skills. Look for roles that match your strengths and interests.
Overcoming Ageism: Ageism can be a challenge in any industry. However, your wealth of experience and knowledge can be a great asset. Highlight your experience and the unique perspective you bring to the table in your applications and interviews.
Remember, it's never too late to pursue a new career path. Good luck on your journey into financial services!
I was so excited about this helpful reply until I remembered it was just silicon analysis. It's still helpful. And it listens better than most humans.
I think next week once we integrate citations it will be much better..
